County paid almost $500,000 to have asbestos removers clean up mess
The county ended up paying almost $500,000 to have licensed asbestos removers clean up the mess and also spent money hiring attorneys for the lawsuits that followed. The county also paid a $60,000 fine to the Environmental Protection Agency.
Waller said that neither he nor other county officials knew there was a law requiring a check for asbestos before renovating old buildings. And even if he had known, he said it was the responsibility of the risk management department to check on those issues.
