The Supreme Court rejected an appeal by W.R. Grace & Co. in a case brought by the government over the company's alleged release of asbestos from a Montana mine, according to the Associated Press on June 23, 2008.
The AP is reporting that in 2005 Federal prosecutors charged the company with violating the Clean Air Act by releasing asbestos from a vermiculite mine in Libby, Mont., even though they allegedly were aware of its dangers.
Grace ran the mine from 1963-1990, and employees took the asbestos carcinogen home on their clothes.
Millions of tons of the asbestos-contaminated vermiculite ore also were shipped from the mine to hundreds of processing plants around the country for use in insulation, fireproofing, gardening and other products.
Asbestos has harmed around 2,000 in the town and caused nearly 225 deaths, say lawyers for the residents.
