According to an October 2008 report from an official with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, many people in the Coweta County area are performing asbestos removal with fraudulent certificates and other credentialing documents. These documents are required in order to certify a worker has been properly trained in the removal and disposal of the dangerous carcinogen.
When the U.S. EPA checked credentials for 89 workers at a Florida remediation site, the EPA found two-thirds of the workers had fraudulent certificates. The EPA also found that one-third of the workers held fraudulent certificates in the name of a dead person.
