In October 2008, residents in the small community of Davidson, North Carolina held community meetings regarding a developer’s plans for renovating a 5.5 acre parcel of land that once housed the Carolina Asbestos Co. The site, known in the community as “Mystery Hill,” contains asbestos that had been buried as part of a 2004 remediation project.
In 2002, an engineering company performed a subsurface asbestos investigation and estimated that 2,100 to 2,300 cubic yards of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) were buried at the site. The same engineering company made a recommendation to the current developers that if the company’s development plans would involve disturbing the asbestos, that a licensed asbestos contractor should be hired to remove the contaminated soil.
