Asbestos Violations at Delaware School

In August 2008, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it had reached a settlement with a Newcastle, Delaware charter school stemming from violations of the Asbestos Hazards Emergency Response Act (AHERA).

After a March 2007 inspection, the EPA fined the schools for failure to conduct initial inspections to identify asbestos containing materials in the school buildings; failure to develop and submit an asbestos management plan for the school; and failure to notify parent, teacher and employee organizations in writing of the availability of management plans.

Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
