Parents at West Des Moines, IA School District Not Told About Asbestos Removal Project
January 2009, The Des Moines Register reported on an asbestos removal project at the junior high school building in the West Des Moines, IA school district.
Since the work was to be done over the district’s winter break when no students or staff would be present, the district did not advise parents of the planned asbestos remediation.
According to the District, most of the asbestos found in the building is in the tile adhesive sued in the building’s rooms and hallways. The asbestos needs to be removed before a planned renovation project begins in summer 2009.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
