Dickinson County, MI Non-Profit Fined for Asbestos Violations
On July 14, 2009, a Dickinson County, MI television station reported that an area Habitat for Humanity division and a Wisconsin excavation company were fined by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) for asbestos violations.
In April 2009, an asbestos-contaminated home in Vulcan, MI was demolished. MIOSHA determined that the demolition took place without following state-mandated regulations for the removal of asbestos-containing materials.
Habitat for Humanity was fined $1,500, and the excavation company was ordered to pay $4,050 in fines.
Even short-term exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
