DANGEROUS OCCUPATION
Drywall tapers risk mesothelioma from on-the-job asbestos exposure

Drywall workers, installers and tapers diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease are urged to contact Weitz & Luxenberg for a completely free evaluation of their right to financial compensation.

January 20, 2009 -- Because of the superior insulating and fire-retardant properties in asbestos, construction and building renovation workers have long been plagued by building materials saturated with asbestos. Asbestos exposure is recognized by medical authorities and the court system as a leading cause of fatal diseases that include: asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

The occupation of “drywall worker” is among the most dangerous jobs in the building industry, due to the high risk of asbestos exposure on the job. Before 1980, asbestos was commonly used in drywall tape and drywall joint compound.

There are two kinds of drywall workers: installers and tapers:

  • Drywall Installers (also called applicators or hangers) fasten drywall panels to a building's inside framework. In order to fit them around doorways, windows, etc., installers are often required to cut drywall panels, possibly releasing asbestos-containing dust into the air.

  • Drywall Tapers (or finishers) tape and finish joints and imperfections in the drywall in preparation for painting. To reinforce the drywall and to hide imperfections they sand the drywall, and work with asbestos-containing drywall joint compound and paper tape.

Diseases associated with asbestos generally do not appear for 20 or more years after the initial exposure. Thus, people who haven't worked as a drywall worker, drywall installer or drywall taper for decades can still develop mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease.

Former drywall workers, drywall installers and drywall tapers are all urged to discuss their possible asbestos exposure with their doctor. For a free consultation about your potential asbestos drywall lawsuit, please fill out the Weitz & Luxenberg communication form below.
