El Dorado, CA Residents Oppose New Housing Development Due to Naturally Occurring Asbestos
In February 2009, The Sacramento Bee reported on an issue impacting the El Dorado Hills, CA community. Residents are worried about plans to build a 135-home residential community in the Sierra foothills, where deposits of naturally-occurring asbestos are present.
The planned construction will put those living near the site at risk for exposure to asbestos, as the area is known to contain veins of amphibole asbestos. This type of asbestos is considered more toxic than other forms of asbestos. During a 1998 EPA study of the area, the report concluded that everyday outdoor activities where dust would be generated would release both tremolite and actinolite varieties into the air.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
