In early September 2008, The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it would be testing several dozen Minneapolis, Minnesota homes for asbestos.
The testing is being conducted as part of the cleanup resulting from the long-closed W.R. Grace Co. vermiculite ore procssing plant. The factory gave away asbestos-laced waste for homeowners to use as fill in for their driveways, yards and gardens.
In 2004, the EPA removed contaminated soil from 268 yards, and has now decided to test the air and dust in 30 to 50 of those homes as a precaution.
The testing will be conducted throughout September 2008, at a cost of approximately $200,000. The EPA attorney has stated that the EPA expects W.R. Grace to reimburse the EPA for most of testing and analysis costs.
