ASBESTOS FLOORING CEMENT
Weitz & Luxenberg – Legal advocate for all working-class New Yorkers
Workers ripping up old vinyl flooring tile for office or home renovation projects need to be wary of the flooring cement beneath the tile because, prior to 1986, flooring cement, like the vinyl floor tile itself, often contained asbestos, a carcinogenic material commonly used in building products for decades – despite being linked to thousands of cases of occupational asbestos exposure every year.
If you are a former construction worker, building maintenance employee or vinyl asbestos floor tile installer and you’ve been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you can obtain a free case review with Weitz & Luxenberg by sending us case information using the form at left.
ASBESTOS FLOORING CEMENT
July 16, 2010 – Vinyl asbestos floor tile, frequently a contractor’s tile of choice in homes and offices built before 1986, reportedly contained up to 30 percent asbestos and was glued into place with asbestos flooring cement.
Maintenance workers who regularly sand or polish aging vinyl asbestos tile floors, or construction workers who regularly remove vinyl asbestos tiles during home renovation projects, risk asbestos exposure and disease from the floor tile and the asbestos flooring cement.
Occupational asbestos exposure kills thousands of workers worldwide every year. Asbestos exposure is caused by accidental inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers that dislodge from asbestos-based building products during installation or renovation work.
And because asbestos diseases can take decades to develop, a floor worker exposed 30 or 40 years ago can still develop symptoms of asbestosis or mesothelioma today.
Protection against asbestos flooring cement
To prevent this common occurrence, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) in 1986, which banned certain asbestos products from the market.
The legislation was enacted to protect construction workers, building maintenance employees, and vinyl asbestos floor tile workers from contracting asbestos-related disease like asbestosis and mesothelioma.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency oversees enforcement of AHERA.
