Asbestos Removal to Begin at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas Site
In May 2009, Arkansas officials announced that asbestos remediation would begin at the site of the former Fort Chaffee military center, and that an innovative asbestos-removal technique would be utilized.
This new method, created by an Atlanta-based company, will reduce the anticipated project costs from approximately $4.6 million to $435,000.
The Department of Defense site had turned over the 7,000 acre site back to civilian control several years prior. Plans to convert the land for residential, commercial and industrial uses were complicated when a 2008 fire destroyed most of the buildings on the property.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious lung illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
