Asbestos exposure a factor in gastrointestinal cancer
Some studies show that asbestos exposure is a risk factor for gastrointestinal cancer.
Researchers have found gastrointestinal cancer to be related to asbestos exposure. In two studies, which evaluated 20,000 employees who were regularly exposed to significant levels of workplace asbestos found that these workers had almost double the risk of developing gastrointestinal cancer than those in the general population. Employees with the greatest risk of developing gastrointestinal cancer include workers in the insulation, mining, milling, roofing, and textiles industries, among many other industries that manufacture asbestos-containing products.
Additionally, individuals who are frequently exposed to high levels of non-occupational exposure to asbestos may also be at increased risk of developing gastrointestinal cancer.
