On March 20, 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it would assume responsibility and oversight of the Georgia Clean Air Act Asbestos Program. Because of budget constraints, the state was no longer able to provide the necessary oversight of the asbestos program.
The Georgia EPA division will continue to oversee functions such as processing notifications of asbestos renovation, encapsulation and/or demolition projects, issuing asbestos contractor licenses and approving asbestos supervisor training courses.
The EPA will be responsible for conducting inspections and regulatory enforcement at asbestos abatement renovation, disposal, and demolition projects.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
