THE W.R. GRACE COMPANY
Federal charges fail to trim asbestos company’s earnings

October 30, 2008 -- Recent third-quarter earnings from W.R. Grace Company prove that the company responsible for asbestos contamination in Libby, Montana, hasn’t suffered from its asbestos business dealings, nor a pending criminal trial set for February.

The company recently announced a profit of $889.4 million for the third financial quarter of 2008, which is a 13% increase over the previous quarter’s figure of $783.1 million.

It seems bitter indeed that the company’s fortunes are on the way up, even as people in Libby continue to die as a result of its actions.

Libby, Montana

Libby is famous for being a small town that operated a vermiculite mine contaminated with asbestos. Local residents and employees of Grace were exposed to dangerously high levels of asbestos for decades, and many have died after being afflicted with asbestos-related diseases, such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Trial date set for February

Federal prosecutors have filed criminal charges against W.R. Grace Co. and six of its top executives, charging them with conspiring to hide health facts from their company employees about the dangers of working with asbestos.

A trial date has been set for February in Missoula, Montana. If convicted, maximum prison sentences for the executives could range between 55 to 70 years, and Grace is facing fines as high as $280 million.

Time to seek justice!

Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. This disease is most often the result of industrial workplace exposure to asbestos – and usually contracted through employers’ greed for profits over the health and safety of its workers.

That’s why people diagnosed with mesothelioma and surviving family members have strong cases in court.
