ASBESTOS GRANTS
U.S. awards $7M in asbestos-abatement grants to Massachusetts to aid state in school building asbestos abatement.
May 20, 2010 - The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides communities with federal grants intended to clean up conditions at former industrial and commercial locations riddled with asbestos and other carcinogenic pollutants.
This month last year several cities in Massachusetts received grants to aid in the cleanup of certain sites, including school buildings laden with toxic asbestos-containing materials.
The funding is provided by federal stimulus money, and funds made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act legislation.
Specifically, Massachusetts grants include $2.7 million from this legislation and $4.4 million from the Environmental Protection Agency.
Announced last May, the grants are intended to help finance asbestos abatement projects at former industrial and commercial locations in Massachusetts, including school buildings.
The state received $400,000 for the cleanup of the former Worcester Massachusetts Technical High School, while the city of Worcester received a $200,000 community-wide assessment grant. North Brookfield received $200,000 to cleanup asbestos on South Common Street.
Asbestos-based products were manufactured on the South Common Street site until the mid-1980s by a company named Aztec Industries/Asbestos Textile. The grant for South Common Street is the third received for the cleanup of a 5.3-acre area known as the North Brookfield Downtown Development Project.
In total, 20 grants were allocated for Massachusetts. Additional communicates that received asbestos grant funding include Framingham, Holyoke, New Bedford, Lowell, the Berkshires and the Merrimack Valley.
