Asbestos Leak Prompts Air Testing at Greensburgh, NY School
In February 2009, officials for the Greensburgh, NY School District announced that air testing would be conducted at the district’s upper-grade elementary school after asbestos was discovered.
The asbestos was found when a pipe in the ceiling in one of the building’s hallways was being repaired. While the hallway was sealed until the pipe was replaced, the district came under fire for not alerting parents of the asbestos hazard.
The Public Employees Safety and Health division of the NY Labor Department was scheduled to perform the air testing.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
