NIOSH recognized health risk from hair dryers 20 years ago

DETAILS OF REPORT:
June 24, 2009 -- An independent analysis conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in 1979 confirmed that the volume of asbestos fibers emitted from hair dryers was comparable to, or greater than, other serious levels of asbestos found at construction sites and inside old school buildings, where school teachers are contracting mesothelioma in record numbers.
Tests were conducted on 30 different hair dryers. The tests, considered the most comprehensive research on asbestos in a consumer product at that time, became the scientific foundation for the Consumer Protection Commission's stance on asbestos regulation in consumer products.
Negotiations between the CPC and almost 40 hair dryer manufacturers resulted in an end to production and distribution of asbestos-containing hand-held hair dryers.
Mesothelioma is cancer of the chest cavity lining and lung membranes. The disease has a latency period of up to 40 years, so people exposed to asbestos prior to 1980 can still develop mesothelioma today. Chemotherapy and radiation may slow the progress of mesothelioma, but there is no known cure.

Penney, Korvette, Montgomery Ward & Co., Norelco, North American Philips Corp., Presto, Schick, Inc., Sears, Roebuck & Co., Sperry Rand Corp. (Remington), and Sunbeam Corp.
