LANDMARK REPORT ON ASBESTOS IN HAIR DRYERS
NIOSH recognized health risk from hair dryers 20 years ago

A report by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) citing the dangers of asbestos in hair dryers influenced asbestos regulations in consumer products.

If you are a former hairdresser suffering from an asbestos-related disease, like mesothelioma, lung cancer or asbestosis, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit for monetary compensation. Discuss your case today with the personal injury law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg, long recognized in the legal community for obtaining record-breaking verdicts and settlements.

DETAILS OF REPORT:

June 24, 2009 -- An independent analysis conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in 1979 confirmed that the volume of asbestos fibers emitted from hair dryers was comparable to, or greater than, other serious levels of asbestos found at construction sites and inside old school buildings, where school teachers are contracting mesothelioma in record numbers.

Tests were conducted on 30 different hair dryers. The tests, considered the most comprehensive research on asbestos in a consumer product at that time, became the scientific foundation for the Consumer Protection Commission's stance on asbestos regulation in consumer products.

Negotiations between the CPC and almost 40 hair dryer manufacturers resulted in an end to production and distribution of asbestos-containing hand-held hair dryers.

Mesothelioma is cancer of the chest cavity lining and lung membranes. The disease has a latency period of up to 40 years, so people exposed to asbestos prior to 1980 can still develop mesothelioma today. Chemotherapy and radiation may slow the progress of mesothelioma, but there is no known cure.

Manufacturers of asbestos hair dryers

The list of hair dryers recalled in 1979 is extensive, and includes 90 percent of the manufacturers at that time: Andis, Bonat Inc., Clairol, Conair Corp., Dominion Division of Scovill Manufacturing, General Electric Co., The Gillette Company, Hamilton Beach Division of Scovill Manufacturing, J.C. Penney, Korvette, Montgomery Ward & Co., Norelco, North American Philips Corp., Presto, Schick, Inc., Sears, Roebuck & Co., Sperry Rand Corp. (Remington), and Sunbeam Corp.
