NEWS UPDATE:
June 24, 2009 – In the past 30 years, there have been numerous recorded cases of hairdressers dying of asbestos-related mesothelioma before the age of 60.
People who have worked as hairdressers, beauticians, hair stylists, hair technicians, or cosmetologists (an industry with approximately 1 million professionals) have a high rate of asbestos-related mesothelioma, just like workers who have held jobs in the construction, manufacturing or shipping industries.
Asbestos was utilized in almost every hair dryer prior to 1980 to regulate heat and electricity. Most manufacturers voluntarily stopped using asbestos in their models after a 1979 government study identified asbestos-related health risks. (See NIOSH asbestos hair dryer report.)
People who worked in the industry are still being diagnosed today, however. That’s because mesothelioma has a long latency period between exposure and diagnosis that commonly lasts 20 to 40 years, though it may be even longer.
Asbestos was used as an insulator in the popular hood-type hair dryers found in every beauty shop in America, as well as in the newer hand-held blow dryers.
As asbestos linings inside hood-type hair dryers crumbled with age, asbestos dust was emitted into the salon and infiltrated operators’ lungs. Likewise, a hand-held blow dryer, with its increased air flow, can force toxic asbestos fibers out into the environment and directly into the respiratory system.
The truth about asbestos
Despite the fatal health consequences associated with asbestos exposure, asbestos is still imported and used in the United States for its insulation properties. The United States imported and used an estimated 1,820 tons of asbestos in 2007, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with mesothelioma. This disease is most often the result of industrial workplace exposure to asbestos – and usually contracted through the manufacturers’ blatant disregard for health and safety over corporate profits. That’s why people diagnosed with mesothelioma and surviving family members have strong cases in court.
