Inspection Reveals No Asbestos Hazards at Hartford, CT Demolition Site
In March 2009, the Hartford Courant reported on possible asbestos problems in connection with the demolition of the former WFSB television station in Hartford, CT.
Connecticut Department of Health inspectors visited the demolition site after a local labor union filed a complaint. That inspection revealed no asbestos problems.
The company performing the demolition had been fined in 2004 for violations of state regulations pertaining to the removal of asbestos-containing materials. The company paid a $7,500 fine for a number of violations, including failing to ensure that workers were certified to perform asbestos removal, failing to restrict work areas to authorized personnel and failure to ensure workers and equipment were decontaminated.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
