In November 2008, city officials in Hayswood, Kentucky announced the geological survey of the former Hayswood Hospital had been completed. The city’s next step was to apply for a Brownsfield grant from the state, which would be needed to remove asbestos from the building.
In 2006, the site underwent an environmental assessment by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The USACE estimated the cost of the site cleanup to be $5 million.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
