Holland, Michigan Demolition Company Indicted for Improper Asbestos Removal
In March 2009, the owners of a Holland, Michigan demolition company were indicted for alleged failures to follow federal and state regulations pertaining to the disposal of asbestos materials.
The indictment alleges that the owners of the company knew that roof panels at a demolition site were covered with asbestos, but nonetheless ordered employees to tear down the panels. The panels were also broken into small pieces, posing a further risk to workers to be exposed to dangerous asbestos dusts. Finally, the company also allegedly ordered employees to improperly load asbestos-contaminated debris onto trucks and to take the debris to a recycler not authorized to accept asbestos waste.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
