DEQ Files Charges Against Owners of Humbolt, AZ Landfill: Asbestos, Other Violations Found
On April 6, 2009, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) announced they had filed a lawsuit against the owners of the Iron King landfill in Humbolt, AZ. The charges stem from asbestos and other violations which stemmed back to 2005.
The landfill owners were charged with a number of violations, including those related to the demolition of asbestos-containing structures near the landfill in 2007-08. They were also charged with accepting non-permitted waste; failing to follow DEQ regulations for closing a landfill; failing to monitor groundwater; failing to monitor methane; and failing to cover a mandated bond to that would cover long-term monitoring of the landfill.
If convicted, the owners may be ordered to pay fines up to $25,00 per day from June 7007-February 2008, and $10,000 per day from February 2008 onward.Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
