Huntington, WV School Closed After Possible Asbestos Release
On March 20, 2009, The Herald Dispatch reported that a middle school in the Cabell County School District in Huntington, WV had been closed as a precautionary measure because asbestos may have been released during a building renovation project.
A contractor working at the building had accidentally drilled several holes into a section of ceiling in the building. The worker was apparently unaware of the asbestos materials in the ceiling.
The area of potential contamination was less than three square feet. The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) does not consider this incident as a major fiber release episode.
As a precautionary measure, the district superintendent ordered the school closed so that air quality testing could be conducted at the school.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
