Jamestown, New York Library To Undergo Renovations and Asbestos Remediation
On August 31, 2009, the 118-year old Prendergast Library in Jamestown, New York will temporarily close for renovations. The project will include the removal of asbestos. The library is expected to be closed for approximately three months for the abatement and renovation project.
This necessary work is being undertaken for two reasons: the ballasts for the lighting fixtures in the building are no longer being manufactured, and removal of asbestos in the ceiling must be done in order to replace ceiling tiles. In addition, replacement of worn carpeting in the building requires that asbestos-containing floor tiles be removed.
The project is estimated to cost approximately $800,000. Funding for the project was secured from several sources, including a number of charitable non-profit organizations and the New York State Public Library Construction Grant program.
Even limited exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
