Demolition, Burning of Asbestos Debris in Kalamazoo, MI Results in DEQ Citations
In July 2009, the Kalamazoo Gazette reported on a controversy regarding the removal and subsequent burning of asbestos-contaminated debris at a property owned by Pavilion Township in Kalamazoo, MI.
In May 2009, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) cited Pavilion Township and the excavating company that performed the work for failing to notify state officials of the planned demolition of several vacant homes and a garage.
The site was inspected in April 2009, and the DEQ allegedly advised the Township that the buildings contained asbestos-containing materials, and therefore, could not be burned. However, the Pavilion Township Supervisor sent the DEQ a letter in June 2009 stating they were unaware that the debris could not be burned.
The DEQ Air Quality Division and its Office of Criminal Investigations is currently investigating the incident, and future action may be taken against the Township and the excavating company for their roles in the demolition project.
