Karnack, TX Powerhouse to be Demolished After Asbestos Removal
In February 2009, the Marshall News Messenger reported on plans to demolish the former Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant in Karnack, TX. The building is located on what is now part of the Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Asbestos and other environmental hazards will be removed from the building prior to demolition.
According to a spokesperson for the Tulsa District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the District has hired a company to manage asbestos remediation, demolition and debris removal. The building’s boiler is lined with asbestos firebrick and asbestos is present in boiler seams and grouts.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
