In October 2008, the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection (KDEP) issued a warning to Bowling Green residents regarding asbestos-contaminated demolition debris from an area warehouse. The wood timber and roofing debris, which had been converted to mulch, was given to area residents free of charge. It is not yet known how many loads of the asbestos-containing materials had been taken by area residents or other entities.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
The KDEP advised the material came from a demolition site at the former Independent Tobacco Warehouse, located at the eastern edge of Horse Cave, KY. After the KDEP received a complaint about the demolition, the site tested positive for asbestos. Their investigation also revealed the Kentucky Division for Air Quality was not advised of the demolition or the need for asbestos sampling, which is required for any demotion to occur.
Two notices of violation against the company that owned the warehouse are pending.
