After an investigation conducted by the Oregon
Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), a Klamath
County contractor has been issued an $8,229 penalty for permitting an unlicensed
person to perform an asbestos abatement on a
county road project.
The Department also fined another contractor $4,200 for conducting asbestos abatement without being properly licensed to perform that task.
As part of their investigation into the road project, DEQ staff noted the contactor had removed several hundred feet of asbestos-containing pipe in a manner that caused parts of the pipe to shatter, causing asbsestos fibers to be released into the air.
Airborne asbestos fibers are known to be a serious carcinogen. Because the latency period between inhaling asbestos and showing signs of serious lung diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis is several decades long, those exposed to asbestos may not show signs of any disease for over 30 years.
