Lisbon, OH Landfill Used for Disposal of Asbestos and Other Wastes to Close
As of February 2009, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Ohio officials were working to finalize an agreement for the closure of a landfill in Lisbon, OH. The landfill was used to dump many dangerous substances, including asbestos.
The EPA inspectors had documented a number of violations in recent years, including the acceptance and disposal of solid wastes, the improper handling and disposal of asbestos waste, the failure to properly cover waste and improperly managing surface water.
The tentative agreement calls for the landfill to stop taking waste at the 42-acre disposal area, which was licensed to take demolition debris and asbestos. The owners of the landfill will be required to install a permanent cap on the landfill and implement a gas management system.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
