In October 2008, it was reported that asbestos had been found on the ground near the newly completed recreation fields in Lyndhurst, NJ. The asbestos was found near the field’s property line, which is adjacent to the Conrail railroad tracks. The discovery led officials to suspect the asbestos was unearthed when a fence was installed on the recreation field property.
On October 20, 2008, soil boring testing was to be conducted to determine the size of the asbestos-containing area and how deeply the asbestos was buried. This test follows up on July 2008 soil sample tests of five areas between the center’s baseball fields and the Conrail tracks. Four of the five tests were positive for chrysotile asbestos.
