Unlicensed Shrewsbury, Massachusetts Asbestos Contractor Continues to Dodge Restitution Fines

Get a free copy of our sourcebook, "Mesothelioma, Lung Cancer, Asbestos Litigation And Your Rights."

For the past three years, several Shrewsbury, Massachusetts homeowners have been attempting to get law enforcement authorities to act against an area contractor who failed to competently oversee and complete contracting jobs. Their frustration stems from state building regulator reports reflecting the contractor collected several hundred thousand dollars for projects which resulted in homeowners incurring serious building code violations for unfinished and poorly done work, including work involving the removal of asbestos.

In 2005, the contractor was convicted of fraudulently cashing checks given to him by homeowners for building materials and services. Although being sentenced to probation, having his state contractor’s license revoked and being fined $48,000, the man has not made restitution and continues to operate a contracting business without repercussions from the state.

In February 2006, inspectors from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection visited a commercial renovation project, where they discovered the contractor was serving as general contractor.

During their site inspection, they found a dozen household trash bags stuffed with asbestos insulation. The contractor was subsequently fined $36,625. That fine has still not been paid.  Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
