In October 2008, the Merino, Colorado Volunteer Fire Department met with representatives of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Northeast Colorado Health Department (NECHD) to discuss issues regarding a controlled burn of an old building that was later found to contain asbestos.
The building had been burned in September 2008. The material was pushed into a hole on the property, where it continued to burn for two days. One week later, a CDPHE specialist visited the site and confirmed the presence of asbestos.
