EPA Settles Asbestos Reporting Complaints at Mesa, Arizona School
In January 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it had settled a case with a Mesa, Arizona charter school for violations of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA).
After an April 2007 inspection, the EPA determined that the school had not performed required inspections for asbestos-containing materials at the school and had not created an asbestos management plan.
Under federal law, all schools are required to conduct an initial inspection for asbestos using accredited inspectors. Even in schools where no asbestos is found, a management plan to address any future discovery of asbestos must be developed and implemented.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
