In November 1999, the media ran a series of newspaper articles which reported that miners and their families in the area of Libby, Montana died or became ill from exposure to asbestos-contaminated vermiculite ore, which has been mined near Libby since the 1920s.
Subsequently, the media reported that Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials knew about the exposure to asbestos and the dangers it posed, but did not take any action.
