On November 3, 2008, maintenance workers at a middle school in Mineola, New York discovered the presence of asbestos while performing renovation work in the building’s basement.
The school district ordered a pollution-detection test to be performed. That test found a "slight elevation" of 74.5 asbestos structures per millimeter, beyond the acceptable limit of 70.
The school was re-opened two days later. However, the district has advised that all asbestos in the school will be removed by the end of the district’s winter break in February 2009, and the school building will be thoroughly cleaned.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
