EPA Issues Immediate Compliance Asbestos Order Against Morristown, TN Salvage Company
On March 12, 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued an order requiring a salvage company working at the closed Liberty Fibers Rayon Plant in Morristown, TN to cease operations at the facility. The order resulted from the company’s violations of both the National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESAP) and an August 2008 consent agreement regarding the removal of asbestos-containing debris.
The EPA has charged the company with the improper handling, storage and disposal of asbestos-containing waste materials. The company was also charged with hiring workers that were not properly trained to perform asbestos abatement work, as well as permitting workers to handle asbestos materials without proper protection.
