Citizen Open House to Address Asbestos Dumping Sites Located in Nashua, RI
On June 22, 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and representatives of the City of Nashua, RI will meet with residents and business owners in order to discuss concerns regarding asbestos dumping sites in the Nashua area.
There are approximately 175 known locations where asbestos was dumped, including areas zoned for residential and business uses. City-owned properties are also located on or near asbestos dumping sites.
Among the topics to be discussed at the open house include property owners’ responsibilities, potential health risks and asbestos management. Residents will also be provided with information regarding how to reduce the potential risk of exposure to the dangerous carcinogen and the state and federal requirements for removing asbestos. The EPA will also share strategies regarding asbestos abatement and redevelopment at select sites where asbestos was dumped.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
