In November 2008, residents of a Newport News, Virginia neighborhood discovered a 100-foot water tower had been torn down as part of a demolition project at the former Chase Packaging Corp. building. It was later discovered the tower had been demolished without the company having first secured a permit to perform the work and certifying the site was free of asbestos.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
The EPA and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality are now involved in the oversight of the demolition project in order to make sure that asbestos and other hazardous materials at the site are removed and disposed of properly.
