Asbestos Discovered at OHara Township, PA Church
In February 2009, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that asbestos was found when leaking pipes at an OHara Township Catholic church were being repaired. The church, located in a suburb of Pittsburgh, PA is expected to remain closed for approximately four to six weeks.
When the waterline broke in mid-January, it was originally thought the repairs would be completed within two weeks. When asbestos was discovered in the ceiling and floor tiles, the Diocese of Pittsburgh hired an abatement contractor to remove the asbestos from the entire church.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
