Controversy in Asbestos Removal Project in Passaic, NJ
When the city of Passaic, NJ took possession of the abandoned People’s Bank and Trust Company building in downtown Passaic in 2008, the city’s plans to redevelop the building included the task of having asbestos removed from the 70 year old art deco building.
However, several issues have arisen regarding the project and the company hired to perform the work. The company’s bid, which was 30 percent lower than any other competing bid, led to concerns regarding the company’s ability to competently complete the project and to ensure the asbestos is removed safely.
Also at issue is the current plan to have the asbestos removal project continue during evening hours, and whether the nighttime schedule would prevent required state inspections for asbestos remediation projects to be properly conducted.
When these and other issues are resolved to the satisfaction of the members of the Passaic City Council, more information regarding the project start and completion dates will be announced.
