EPA To Monitor Asbestos Cleanup at Former Piqua, Ohio Hospital
In April 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced they would be monitoring the removal of asbestos at the former Piqua Hospital in Ohio.
The hospital, which had been vacant since 1996, had been subsequently purchased by a developer. During the course of a November 2008 rehab project at the site, it was discovered that the contractor was improperly removing asbestos. A stop work order was issued in December 2008.
The EPA conducted an inspection of the building and piles of debris piles the hospital property in March 2009, which revealed that in addition to asbestos, mercury and acids were also present.
The EPA advised that the asbestos abatement work would begin on April 6, 2009. The remediation of mercury and acid will take place once the asbestos removal project is complete.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
