On September 15, 2008, officials in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Steel Valley School District acknowledged that asbestos had been found in the roof of one of the district’s elementary schools, causing an announcement two days later that the school would be closed until asbestos concerns have been resolved.
Asbestos was fund in core samples taken from the roof by a contractor hired by the district to repair the building’s roof. When the roof materials were found to contain asbestos, the repair project was stopped.
The roofing contractor has filed an asbestos abatement plan with the Allegheny County Health Department, and a Health Department inspector visited the school to take air samples from inside of the building for testing.
Once the testing is completed, the Health Department and school district will make a determination on when the school will be deemed safe to re-open.
