A study conducted by two Japanese physicians about the risk for individuals living near manufacturing plants where asbestos-containing materials (ACM) are present concluded what health experts have long thought: that merely living near an asbestos plant increases the risk for those people to develop asbestosis, asbestos-related lung cancer and mesothelioma.
The study was published in the September 2008 edition of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
The researchers based their findings on a study people living near a Japanese asbestos pipe plant between 1957 and 1975. They discovered 73 residents who lived near the plant between 1957 and 1975 that had no occupational exposure to asbestos died from mesothelioma between 1995 and 2006.
