Providence, RI Asbestos Abatement Contractor Sentenced
In July 2008, the owner of a Providence, RI asbestos abatement company was sentenced after pleading guilty to extorting kickbacks from public works employees and filing false tax returns.
The asbestos abatement company performed work for housing authorities in the cities of Providence, Cranston and North Providence, RI, as well as work for an area school district and a neighboring town.
Between 2005 and 2006, he submitted documentation showing that the business issued payroll checks to employees. However, the man paid his workers in cash, in amounts much less than the payroll records reflected. He was also convicted of converting over $400,000 in business income to cash and failing to report almost $300,000 of income on his tax returns.
