Asbestos Concerns at Bell Park Gardens Co-Op Apartments in Queens, New York
Since 2006, residents of the Bell Park Gardens Co-Op have been asking hard questions about the asbestos removal project at the Queens, New York apartment complex.
After the Board of Directors first solicited proposals to remove the dangerous carcinogen from the complex, they hired a company in spring 2007. The company subsequently assigned the job to a subsidiary company.
New York City regulations require an independent air testing company be hired to monitor asbestos abatement projects, leading the Board to hire an air testing company recommended by the abatement company. It was later discovered that both the abatement and air testing company were owned by the same family.
Residents continued to register complaints about the abatement project. Residents stated the abatement work began without warning. Residents also reported seeing workmen carrying out materials in wheel barrows, leaving footprints and a trail of dust in their wake.
in 2008, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) conducted five separate inspections, which resulted in two violation citations for failure to wet asbestos before removal.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
