Queensbury, NY School District Plans Asbestos Remediation, Other Renovations at District Schools
Like countless other public and private schools in the nation, the Queensbury, NY school district must fund the costs of asbestos removal before needed renovations can take place at two district schools. Because of their exposure to asbestos, elementary school teachers are among those at greatest risk to develop serious illnesses such as mesothelioma cancer, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.

In January 2010, representatives of the Queensbury Union Free School District announced a planned $16.5 million project to improve the district’s middle school and transportation building. The project, which is scheduled to take place over the course of two summers, will include asbestos abatement.
According to the district superintendent, the project will include renovations at the middle school science classrooms, gym, ventilation and heating systems. The project will also include upgrades to the boilers, electrical and ventilation systems at the district’s elementary school.
Asbestos Risks at Schools
Asbestos materials were used in many areas in older schools, including boiler rooms, as insulation covering heating pipes in school classrooms, hallways and radiators, and in the plaster used to cover walls in classrooms and halls. Asbestos-containing mastics and glues were also routinely used on floor and wall tiles found in school hallways, gyms, bathrooms and cafeterias.
Statistics from the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) regarding jobs where workers have the highest risks and numbers of workers who develop serious asbestos diseases show chilling news for school teachers. After carpenters and construction-related occupations, elementary school teachers have the highest risk and asbestos disease diagnosis rates in the nation.
This high risk and diagnosis rate has been linked to the traditional elementary school teacher career path, where many spend their careers working in one school, sometimes in the same classroom.
