Navy Environmental Health Center Confirmed Presence of Asbestos in Railcars
Asbestos in railcars? The Navy says it's true.
With the railcar repairs being designated a high priority, the Public Works Commission asked industrial hygienists at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) to assist with the restoration project.
The work had to be done quickly. The goal of the industrial hygienists was to ensure that workers were properly protected against hazardous materials.
They took samples of railcar ceiling materials and sent them to the Navy Environmental Health Center (NEHC) in Norfolk, Va., for analysis.
The Center has a laboratory that is certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to determine the presence of asbestos in samples of materials submitted to them.
The Center’s laboratory examined the samples of railcar ceiling materials and confirmed that the adhesive tar material contained significant amounts of asbestos.
