Stories of other asbestos related diseases
Along with serious illnesses such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis, other asbestos related diseases include nonmalignant lung and pleural disorders including pleural plaques (changes in the membrane around the lung), pleural thickening, and benign pleural effusions, which are abnormal amounts of fluids between the thin layers of tissue lining the lungs and chest cavity wall. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), although pleural plaques are not precursors to cancer, individuals with asbestos-related pleural diseases may be at greater risk of lung cancer.
In this section, we have compiled personal stories of people like you who suffer from these asbestos related diseases. In understanding their stories, perhaps it will bring greater insight into your own situation. The stories are broken up into the following categories:

Other cancers linked to asbestos
Some health studies have pointed to increases in stomach, esophageal, colon-rectal, kidney, nose, and ovarian cancer as well, from asbestos exposure. “While the magnitude of increased cancer risks for these areas are not as great as for lung cancer and mesothelioma, the increased risk may be of considerable importance because of the high background rates of some of these tumors in the general population,” noted Hazardous Materials Assessment, an environmental health consulting group that specializes in asbestos. “By way of example, a 50% increase of risk in a common cancer such as colo-rectal cancer results in many more deaths than a similar 50% increase in a rare cancer.”
