The indictment describes a yearlong scheme in which the Standard Coosa Thatcher plant in Chattanooga was illegally demolished despite containing large amounts of asbestos that should have been removed first.
The indictment also alleges that the owners and supervisors falsified documents and lied to federal authorities.
Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Every year in the United States some 3,000 individuals die of mesothelioma, the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer. Mesothelioma patients usually die within one year of a diagnosis.
